That’s similar to the design and dimensions of a build I have going. It’s cool to know I’m thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of one of the masters here. You will probably be done and have it tested before I get halfway into mine. I'm really curious to see what the benefits insulating the top of the fire box will yield. In discussion with another smoker builder, we assumed that it would stifle the radiant heat too much.
1. What are your target temperatures in the warming chamber?
2. Did you intend to use the opening from the CC into the fire box for both smoke and heat?
3. If so, does the volume of the WC factor in when calculating design dimensions?

I plan on using the warmer for smoking sausage and using as a warmer. Insulation will keep the temps more under control in the warmer. I'm looking to stay around 160 to 250 on average. Buy opening the damper in the bottom plate the warmer can get temps add high as 450 with no problems. The opening from the CC is there as another source of heat and smoke that will not be as intense as the bottom one. The warmer has no effect on the calculations.

This is how I install them. I leave them sticking out past the edge of the cabinet enough to make a nice weld joint

I put about 3 in of Roxul between my FB and WC and my temps are 175 if closed down and 375-400 no problem on the top side. I cook my chicken in the WC cuz I can peg the temp at 300 forever.

Can't wait to see how much easier you can make a smoker build look by planning ahead. The full square is awesome as you can move racks up and down since all the racks are the same size. Might be time to sell my latest smoker already!! Don't tell the wife.

Have you executed this design already? I would guess yes.

Thanks guys!
Onesquin, yes I Have several times. One of my customers in Texas gets a 4 hour burn in between stoking the fire. I'm sure he has some temp swing but he is doing it mainly for catering

So Frank, are you telling me on the following design I can skip the chimney and pipe it through the warmer with a dampered exhaust on that? Or, since my FB is not insulated, would my temps get too high in the WC with the radiant heat from the FB together with the residual heat / smoke exiting the CC?

That's a good point, building something well thought out... My problem is despite the plan, I seem to deviate enough to get into trouble. When you have the extreme skill Frank has, you can pull yourself right through. I would watch New Yankee Workshop and Norm would make those miters fit instantly and perfectly, just like your corners on the FB!

I am vicariously diggin the heck out of this unfolding in front of me

Make no mistake, there ain't no powder in this Puff ! And... I'm not really a crazy person but I play one in real life

Thanks puff!
Mmmmm, on the stack you need to run it like your pic shows. It will not work properly on the warmer only. The warmer will work fine without insulation. I've built many that way.
