Today I got the hinges installed on the door of my FB. The door is going to seal up nicely and should be completely air tight. The latch is now welded. The only thing is the way I installed the hinges the door cannot be removed. Any comments on that? Is that a big deal? Otherwise it operates like a dream.

 Looking good.
Can't see a major hassle with the door not being able to be removed.
Definitely coming along nicely, well done!

Thanks ajfoxy.

What about a handle on the door? Is that a must have?

Nice to have. More so if you have to feed the thing. The thing gets a tad hot.
Were it me, I'd definitely be putting a handle on it while you are still in the building mode.

:yth: You can always cut the hinges off if you have to and weld them back on.

Thanks for all the great comments guys...

I have to say that I'm a little disappointed that I failed to achieve my original goal. And that was to have this build ready for the first cook to be for Daytona. I made do though with my 2 door propane Masterbuilt. Did up some beef ribs and they turned out amazing! Enjoy the race for all you NASCAR fans.

Thanks for all the replies

It actually worked out for the better because of the weather. If I would have rushed it to cook for the weekend the overall project would have suffered. Now I can just take my time and do it right. I'm in southern Alberta and it's still full on winter here. I'm trying to find a supplier close by to buy those spring handles. Can anyone help with that?

If you are really stuck and desperately need one, get a cheapie welding hammer and cut the hammer part off and you have a spring handle and bar.

Thanks for the advice. I have an old tool from a cast iron stove that I think I can adapt. I have nothing against buying from bbqsupply other than the nonsense of paying in Canadian dollars shipping customs and waiting a couple weeks. Much easier for you folks south of the border.

So just for sh*ts and giggles I went through the online order for a handle on bbqsmokersupply. I picked the $20.00 handle that comes with 1/2" rod which would be perfect for my FB door. By the time you add up the cost of handle, shipping and the exchange to CDN dollars it would cost me $60 bucks.

Today I got the charcoal basket completed. It doesn't slide worth a crap. I will have to remove one of the slide bars and reposition it so it slides better. It will go in but not easy. For the bottom I used 3/8" hot rolled solid square stock spaced at 3/8" apart. Hopefully it doesn't warp with the heat. Basket turned out pretty good.
