How did you get on with the stainless, did you go across large spans, and was the skin structural at all?

I am concerned about warpage, im pretty confident about the welding, patience is the key, but the inn and outer skin combined to essentially box section, so that is the structural part too. i would had to see it buckle first fire lol.

im using 3mm thick for the skins, 6mm for the baffle plate, not yet got to the firebox, but the oven will be 3mm, but instead of insulation, heat accumlation.

Welding the thin (19G) stainless was a major pain. On the second one I bought 14G steel for the inside skins and that made it easy. The outer SS skins were easier to weld as I had the 18" x 1" tubing to weld against. SS really moves when applying heat, much more so than steel.

I am using 11 gauge all round, and I tabbed it because I know how bad ss is with heat. I intend to let each weld cool down before progressing to the next, they are pretty much 3/4" by 1/8".

just got to not mess it up on the outer skin, which will be fully welded then dressed down and burnished.

not alot to update now, my ships wheel has been dispatch, and we hope the profiles arrive for the weekend. I have 2 sheets of vermiculite to loss in the riser, so ready to go for welding this test piece the weekend, as long as it turns up.

Instead here is a bed i built - canterlever. I moved house whilst building this, this was supposed to be ready for when I left, but i wasnt, 3 years later i finished it. important to do drawings, incase you cant finish it ;)

I moved the stuffs myself, workshop and all. Im not sure I could trust anyone. When I started the bed too, we had the master bedroom, but, 3 kids later we decided they are better of having the big rooms.

Got the riser today, from sheet metal to a box within 3 minutes. Laser cutting is very economical in the UK, it is not much more than standard sheets, so I utilise it when I can.

The time spent on the drawings, means you have a box, which not only builds itself, but perfectly aligns itself. It is also solid without any welds - so the welds are stopping it falling apart, not holding it together. It also proves my tab tolerance. I cant feel any play, so we wont be creeping in on these dimensions.

I was always told to engineer out as much load on a weld as possible, referred to it as good engineering.

Ships wheel also turned up today, and it looks better in person, the patina is stunning.

Thanks guys.... I think this is going to take a little longer than I had hoped.

Worked 7am until 5.30 today, and still didn't get her done. Got some pic though, and progress was pretty good.

Lots more burnishing to do, and the other 2 outer skins, but didn't get enough insulation, so will have to leave on side off, until I get more.

The tab and slot method certainly makes assembly a whole heap easier. Looking good... I think. I still have not got my head around the actual workings of the thing. But once it is done and dusted and producing Q, I'll hopefully get a better understanding of it all.

I am in love with this thread at the moment. Following this project has been great. Ive not seen anything designed or built like this. I cant wait to see it rollin smoke.

I got one outer skin plate on the side, and have order a piece of insulation so i can get the other done during the weekend or weekend.

I have my dads laptop back, so will be going ahead with the drawings - I hope to finalise and order next week.

Then I will need to clean my workshop ready for the build. As i need some clear space on the bench to do this.

I am pretty much done with the drawings for the cook chamber.

To help get the concept across, i have annotated a model, where I have made some parts tranparent so we can see inside.

I have decided to haev the baffle plate removal. Whilst there is some uncertainity of success.

This provides a get out of jail, in case we cant get it hot enough. I will install an element to heat the baffle plate up, and use the smoke only from the cook chamber.

I am hoping this will not be necessary.

From where I sit it looks like it is going to work. Might want to put two flues, one on each side, that way if you have to remove the baffle you can run it like a regular offset with maybe some tuning plates to adjust heat across your cooking surface.

I sure hope it does. I thought about the two flues before, with that exact thought in mind. But I would really like the reverse flow to work, and I guess I will cross that bridge if it comes to it. Essentially I would rather put in more holes because I failed, rather than in case I do.

The baffle plate being removal was easier decision, as I am not even sure if it is a good idea to lock that down for the rest of its life yet, and the tab method is pretty painful to correct a failure - die grinding a lot of welds out.

Ready for quote on cook chamber - 36 parts in total for door and chamber fabrications. This is without hinges, latches, gas struts etc etc.

I had been working last week with the door shut to the workshop, this was because I was doing a lot of welding, and I didn't want my little ones suddenly appearing and staring at the arc.

Early in the week, I did a bit of clean up, preparing for the cook chamber build. When I opened the door, the light hit the riser, and I could see a shadow on all the welds on the front face. Clearly not what I am going for.

This also will be outside all the time, maybe some people wont notice, but I do, and it has to be perfect.

So that is what I have spent my evenings doing this week. Tuning the quickest process to blend it all out again.

After multiple new burnishing wheels, various grits of flap discs, I have found the solution.

My Makita belt sander. Just need to send that across to knock out any high/low spots, then burnish. I am happy again now. I was getting concerned this may well take the rest of my life to get the finish I want, but with the correct process and stepping through grits it is not that bad.

I have now ordered the profiles for the cook chamber, which will arrive for next weekend.

This weekend the riser will be complete. I have insulation and will fill the last cavity and close it, then I will finish the skin, so you cannot see it has been welded at all - fully blended.

This will then be shrink wrapped and removed from the workshop into a safe storage location whilst i continue the build.

I got an image of the riser in the sun. The left edge I have not worked on yet, but the right edge is nearly to the standard I want. Believe it or not, you cannot see this, when it is not in sunlight - in the workshop with door shut looks perfect. Open the door you see the shadows. Now I have a process and range of abrasives, I do not think it will add to much to the project. You can still see a very light shadow on the right, this is so fine now you cant actually feel it, I have 40,60,80 and 120 grits belts arriving for the weekend for my sander, which will make short work of knocking them out.

Wow! That is looking very nice.....you have more patience than me.....my buddy calls me the farmer welder and for good reason. Back when my eyes worked better I used to care...anymore if it sticks together I'm happy
