Trailer build- slow going

Post by Brewery » May 7th, 2012, 8:18 pm

One step forward two steps back! I got my two pieces of pipe made into one finally and sat them on trailer... I need a bigger trailer! I'm thinking a pickup bed trailer is in my near future

Won't a pickup bed trailer be a little awkward for a smoker ... ? :-o

Frank, my brother and I are going to try some local competitions just for fun.. Figure well tag dad along as well.

As for the bed trailer I wouldn't actually use the bed just use the frame, axle, etc as a starting point

Put a big red bow around that and take a picture of it.

Give the picture of it to your wife for mother's day and say something like "SEE - I didn't forget mother's Day!"

Let me know how that comes out... :D

Haha, ok question... I'm using 3/8" wall pipe and have it laid out for two 24" doors with 4" on either side and 4" in between. Do I have enough steel between the doors and on either end to keep pipe from trying to "open" or " close" on itself?

I like that too. you can tack a spider/ X bracing in the ends temporarally. I have done that at times and it does help it to keep its form and roud it up. I think you have it laid out just right

Brewery it's going to do what it want's no matter what you do most times. It's residual stress that is in pipe and tank's both when they where rolled or formed. Sometimes you get lucky and they don't spring to far and sometimes you don't . I like to straighten mine after I put the flat bar on the door. Takes some time.

+1 Blazer. Brewery, I like to have the end caps on before I cut the doors. At least it will somewhat stop the silliness that it will try to do. Leave several webs in the door while cutting will help as well. A bit of cooling time between cuts as well. And when / if it goes screwy on you, there are several ways to tweak the door out. And yeah, 4" spacing is plenty. i have gone as low as 3"

I thought about adding the end caps prior to cutting but I liked the idea of being able to get at welding in the baffle from the ends... Got the doors cut except for the corners anyhow, I already see some movement but guess I'll deal with that once the doors are out

Two questions, do y'all usually weld your hinges on before cutting doors completely out? Also if anyone has used them do you recommend the barrel hinges that are sold on the net? Or ha better luck building your own?? I'm all for building them but I was looking at some 4" weld able barrel hinges online and their priced cheap so I'm considering them just don't have any experience with that type of hinge

Probably the same thing you are referring to as a barrel type I've been calling a bullet style - 2 bullet looking ends sorta tear-drop shaped to form a welding tang with a center pin in one and a bronze washer separating them. I've had great luck using them. My welding shop sells them in about 3 sizes - some with zerks on them which I've never used.

Just want to make sure you line them up fairly accurately when you weld them. I always arrange the pins identical directions so I can slide the door off for service. That has really come in handy since I keep changing my mind - when Edgar's door kept warping... :D

nice straight piece of angle iron works well to keep things aligned, tac it in place and put your hinges against the edge. just my 2 cents...... \m/
