250 gallon trial and error

Post by smokinwelder » February 22nd, 2013, 10:59 pm

Hi there. I am attempting to build a 250 gallon revese smoker. Im going to keep it simple with no warming box, just a firebox, cc, and trailer. Im really not sure what to do next. I did get my hands on a 4x8 sheet of 1/4" plate, but it wont be enough to complete the firebox. I suppose I should get what pieces I can cut up, and started. I was also hoping to get the smoker on the trailer here soon too. We shall see. thanks for looking.

Where is your forklift? Just joking it sure makes it hard to do this stuff without some sort of lift.

I was wondering if someone could chime in and help me with the calculator. I think I cut my firebox half moon hole too big.

heres some dimensions......
tank....30"x84"
half moon....13" tallx28" wide

now I know I could cut whatever half moon size I want in the back plate of the firebox where the half moon will be, but can I get some suggestions? Do I need to take it to an extreme and cut cut out a piece of the half moon cut piece and weld it back on? Please tell me no...lol If i have to I will tho. Sorry if I seem a little slow when it comes to building one of these, but I just wanna get it right. Thank you......ps, if you need any other numbers lemme know. Thanks!

I also need to know if I can get away with a 24"x24"x30" firebox? thanks

Put in as much as you can and hit submit.
It is in welding and metal working section, last topic.

My thought is just make your other moon the right size, and attach the two. Then seal with a weld bead where the larger exposes the smaller.

dosnt sound silly at all.....lemme see if i can see it. Thanks for the fast responses......

ok here we go....

cylinder 30"x80"

fb 24"x30"x24"

chimney 6"

fb intake (square) 8" longx 3" wide

results:....

fb size diff 91.67

chimney length 30/57

2 intakes

throat size 138.24 squared......now whats 138.24 squared? what would that be in height and width in half moon? and do the other numbers look ok? thanks!

My sugesstion would be to increase the size of your firebox to be 24"x30"x30"
While the numbers you posted will make it easier with a single 4'x8' sheet, its only calculated out to be 91% of the recommendedsize for the firebox.
Your half moon cutout does seem to big, my baffle plate is 28 wide and my cutout is setup so that the firebox sits below the baffle plate 1-2 inches. I forget off hand but yours could work if your planning to use the top of the firebox as part of the baffle plate. If im wrong I sure hope someone else with steer us both right, cause I'm also building a 250 smoker on a trailer.

if it makes it easier, do not do a half moon....
it can be whatever shape you want it to be just as long as the throat opening is the at least the size recommended by the calc.
make a trapezoid shape. works just as good as a half moon.

This is the calaulator that I have used in the past. I am slammed with catching up right now, its been a long weekend and my brain wont work that hard with out falling asleep. But this calc works very good. Just pay attention to the letters and numbers so that you get the right cu inchs.

its the chart that says segment area calc......fill in the correct line vs number and it will tell u the cu inchs.

Play with the numbers till the cu inch works with a size that works for your app.
