Reverse Flow Smoker Build in Thailand Land of Smiles (LOS)

Post by gats13us » March 27th, 2013, 10:29 am

Reverse Flow Smoker Thailand...

I wish I could take credit for the build on this project, but that can't and won't happen. All I did was order the plans from Frank and then start my search for metal and a shop with the understanding or at least the willingness to take on the challenge of something they could not understand...

My search went from Nackon Ratchasima Thailand to Savannakhet Laos, where I was offered a job teaching english to Laotion students learning steel work at an Industrial Arts University. Since I was only there to re-new my one year visa I had to decline.

In late 2012 I went into a metal works shop in Korat City about 45 minutes from my house in the village. I showed the plans Frank sent to a Chinese-Thai I say kid because he is about 20yrs old. He looked at the plans and then started his own drawing to ensure he understood what I wanted. My wife with her (limited English) skills did her best to explain what my wild hand gestures and boistrous Texas talk meant. We both left tired but satisfied we found the right place.

We were told it would take about 30 days to complete, we are 70 days into the project and hopeful to have it finished for Songkran, a 5 day holiday for Thais welcoming the rainy season. I also have a challenge from a local Thai in my village to my smoked pig vs his bbq pig. This should be interesting

My builders name is Teety and I must say I am impressed with what he has done. I can't wait to test this thing and figure out what I might have to change.

Keep in mind that all of this started out as flat steel. He rolled it all and I was impressed.

Being in Thailand I am at the mercy of my wife and her translation of what I say.... I must say she does not translate everything I say, but so far Teety after many hand gestures trying to show him what i want things to do has seemed to grasp it well. In the plan cooking grates were not seen, so I went and bought the expanded metal and showed him what I wanted to slide out, and have tried to explain I want a cage for my fire pit that slides and stays off the bottom.

I figure that after I get it home, I can have a local welder come take care of the tweaks i want done. I need to test out this thing and see what it does.

:LG:
I think you are getting your point and ideas across!

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

:LG: If the girls are helping with the build, may wanna have em find some boots. The slag gets hot on the toes if not. I think you and Teety will have a nice cooker once its all done.

The girls were just modeling... If an Asian sees a camera they pose by instinct LOL!!! Actually I was trying to give some folks visual of the size but for some reason I don't think it worked out that way... I will be able to put a whole pig in it any way...

Final pics of the build. Now awaiting a truck to bring it to my house in the village, and awaiting the arrival of high temp paint from Bangkok. Morepics coming soon. We have a cook off scheduled for Songkran (Water Festival) to welcome the rainy season. I will be smoking a whole pig, Boston Butt, and ribs. My challenger is my neighbor a local Thai. I will also drag out homemade coconut cream, and chocolate cream pies. He does not know that yet.Pics of the cook off and Songkran festivities will be posted. It starts on 13 April.

13 April - spoken like a true service man...

From where I'm sitting that looks like it will work great!

Good luck on the rainy season thing that I can't pronounce ... I bet you'll have some pretty stiff competition - but all in fun... :D

I read a post on here about seasoning with coconut oil. My wife was interested and wanted to help out. Here in Thailand you don't just run down to the store and buy Coconut oil. She said she would make it. I was intrigued so I said Ok. She got coconut milk and set off makking it. It took two batches to make enough. I will let you know how it turned out.
