1000 gallon tank build

Post by glendonboy » June 24th, 2013, 11:07 am

Hey guys! A friend got a reat deal on a 1000 gallon propane tank with counter balanced doors and racks already in($250). From looking on here it looks like a reverse flow is the best option. For a firebox, the calculator indicates it needs to be around 43 inches cubed to give the firebox enough space. Do we need to custom build a firebox or does any one have an idea for a tank to use for the firebox instead? And anyother ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Pic of the tank prior to the doors being counter balanced. It was already setup for gas, but looking to make it a wood burner.

What are the dimensions? It may be best to put a fire box on both ends and divide the space long ways under the BP, so the exhaust stack or stacks would be in the middle rather one end. This would keep the whole thing even temps and equal on smoke flow. It would also make the fire boxes the same size as if it were really only a 500 gallon tank.

just my thoughts

I wrote this before I saw the pic are you sure it is not a 500?

I've not actually laid eyes on her yet. they were asking me questions because they knew I was getting into builds. I was told the tank is 14 feet long from tip to tip. I thought 500s were about 10 feet long. Looking at 1000s they should be about 190 inches long and 31 inches wide.. Great idea on the two fireboxes.

If it were 190 inches long and 31 inches in diameter it would be a 620 gallon tank. The picture makes me think that is closer to the truth.

I just looked this up on the google search
American propane tank brand; 1000 Gal = 41 in dia. x 192 in long x 50 in high and weighs 1760 lbs

How about that google?

What gets me is they say it is 14 feet long. would that mean it is a 500?

I would need to know if it is in fact 31 in in dia by 14 feet. Then I could do the math. And yes if the dim are such that is what it is 500 gallons.

I would definitely get your hands on it and take your own measurements before committing to a FB design. Based on the pic, I would bet the tank is 500 gal. I had one similar to it a few years ago.

It is for some boys who want it purely for fund raising for their church and other charities. I thought all the propane tanks were standard sizes. I will get first hand info and post up. The 14ft length measurement was confirmed as best I could but still not first hand. The size of the measuring tape relative to the tank in the pic made me doubtfull. Honest mistake though, as they are as nice of people as I know. Thanks!

Hey Clover,

I like that hoisting rig. I like to make things that lift or lay things that are heavy down.

That is an old tank trailer from the 60's. Still works great today.
