Question number 2

Post by oneeyedwillysbbq » August 7th, 2013, 2:57 pm

I know this has been asked a million times. But I am building a 250 gal offset and I want to build a insulated box for it. My question is how thick do I need the inner and outer panel

Thanks in advanced

Funny I thought he was asking the space between the inner and outer skins....just goes to show you I shouldn't read this stuff while drinking....

Inner panel 1/4" outer 10 gauge ........

I did one recently the pegs you see are 3/4" standoffs I cut holes in the 11 gauge and plugged welded in some areas. The outer skin I had broke as much as I could. I also welded concrete nails in random places to hold the insulation in place

If you make the firebox out of one quarter of an inch plate steel… My opinion is no you do not need insulated… The extra effort put forth doesn't seem to be worth the pay out…

The guy I did it for is a comp cook and very successful at it. He loves it saves on fuel and he runs a stoker on it. His orginal firebox was very much undersized.

I just gotta chime in on this one. I'm a big guy and when I'm hanging out around my smoker 4 - 7 hours on a 85F day or higher I REALLY wish that FB was insulated especially when I am using the griddle top to knock out some dogs for the lunch snack. The radiant heat pushes my endurance to the point that I seldom get to enjoy anything once the cooking is done. Not to mention the high liability of tailgating around crowds, kids today are morons eventually one will get fried against my FB. Maybe from the heat loss aspect the insulation is not worth the effort but from the absolute brutal environment a 28x28 FB can create when it is already pushing 90F outside I wish I had considered such an upgrade.

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

I'm with Solo on this one - disturbing as that might be.

The safety issues ARE Number 1 and BBQ is a family gathering event - that includes kids …. the smart ones and and other ones too. It also includes adults that have been "over served"

….beyond that….

After a few hours working around a hot box, I just feel better if I'm NOT sweating down the back of my eyelids from oppressive heat. I PAID for that heat and dang it - if it's heating ME then it aint cooking FOR me.

I'm gonna get the use out of that heat before it's gone up the stack - insulation is about the only feature that will continuously pay for itself in fuel savings the more you cook. It also makes your cooks more repeatable/predictable in cold winter climates like mine cause I like good "Q" in January too!

Follow your conscience :D

I'll get off my soapbox now…..

:hijack:

Quick story regarding safety and liability. Last year I was at one of my daughter's college games tailgating for her and all her friends. Ever notice how college kids always get hungry when free food is available? I had placed 5 "FIVE" safety cones around the rear and back side of ole Pops since I was at the edge of a large parking lot with folks walking to and from their cars. There was one family set up near by that had a 12 yr old who was running around like a rat on steroids and I had repeatedly called out to him asking to not run near the rig since it was hot and he could get hurt. About 3 hours into this event his mother makes her way over to me and informs me that WHEN her child gets burnt by my smoker she already had my tag number written down to give to the authorities. She caught me off gaurd I must admit and I kinda stood there and blinked. I hesitated long enough I guess cause my wife walked up out of nowhere and stated "no problem I have your picture to report to child services, you're obviously an unfit mother with no intentions of controlling your child". WOW ... gotta love my wife. I hate to admit but now-a-days there are way too many folks looking to cash in on a free ride and if you are sporting a nice smoker rig ... heck ... you must be just loaded.

Getting dizzy .. better hop down now.

I would build a square box next time, and insulate it. But it will be way down the road when this one burns out.

I look at it like this Rick, she has put up with me for 22 yrs so she has seen about ever bad habit there is. I'm not sure her secret powers would be quite as effective on the average stranger but she dang sure knows how to keep me in line. [-x

As for loud mouthed rude women jumping my case in public, I'll give 3:1 that they'll shut their trap within 30 seconds of getting her attention. I can only assume that this has something to do with claiming her turf. :D
