Rib Box Steel gauge

Post by BBsSmokeShack » March 8th, 2014, 1:02 pm

Good afternoon. Newbie here so please forgive me if this has already been asked. I'm building a reverse flow with rib box out of a 250 gallon propane tank. The plan is to cut off one of the bubble ends and fabricate a firebox and rib box that can also be used for extra cook space for butts/shoulders/chicken. I plan on using the rib box as part of the flue similar to a Bubba Grills design. I'm building the firebox out of 1/4" steel. My question is can I get by with smaller gauge on the rib box portion to save money? Or should I stick with the 1/4"? I don't want to cut corners but money is an issue so I need to save where I can.

I would stick with the 1/4". 1/8" or smaller and itll end up warping and moving around on ya when it gets heated.

I really would stick with 1/4" it will cost you a little more now, but you will be glad you did it down the road.

Thanks guys! I was kind of leaning that way but was just looking for the most economical route. Definitely will not sacrifice quality and efficiency though. Thanks again. Will probably have many more questions come up in the future!
