Squared off door question.

Post by jkolb » April 19th, 2014, 7:44 pm

Hey guys, I am new to the forum and absolutely love it. There is so much useful information and ideas on this site. A friend of mine is giving me a 500 gallon propane tank and I am very interested in the plans for the Big Pappas Beast smoker. I have one question though, I have seen a few people modifying tanks to have squared off doors and I was wondering what the reasoning for that is? Thanks for any help and I will post pictures if/when I take the plunge and start.

Just a guess but if a door on a 500 gallon lp tank warps it would be much easier to convert to a squared off door than to try and get the warped door fixed. Another guess would be the door would be huge on a 500 gallon lp tank. Squared off doors could be easier to seal and make stay tight.

Is it normal for one testicle to be larger than the other two?

Squaring off the doors also allows your grates to be larger extending past the curve of the tank to allow for more meat

Many times people have a hard time getting rounded doors to fit properly. This is due to they tend to spring when you cut them. Going with a square door eliminates this. All of our builds from this point forward will have square doors.
