trap plate placement

Post by dbear » January 16th, 2015, 2:33 am

Hey there....not sure what the proper term is, but it is the piece of plate that runs inside the cooking chamber from one end to the other that the smoke flows through? I am building a 24"×53" RF and I wanted to know the preferred height from the bottom center the plate needs to be placed?? Thanks in advance

It's called a reverse follow baffle plate. Seems like most run it 3 to 6 inch below the grate. Also it's usually at the top of the fb to cc opening.

What I like to do is make the fire box (FB) to cooking chamber (CC) opening (Throat opening) cut as low as possible on the CC and stay with the Pit Calc direction. This cut is as high as possible on the FB so then when I weld it to the CC the FB top is the top of the TO so then I extend the same elevation for the baffle plate (BP) through the CC. It is easy then to have about 4" from the BP to your bottom grate (BG).
