About to dive into smoker, one last question.

Post by jkolb » March 24th, 2015, 9:27 am

I'm going to use a round firebox, but for cook space reasons I am going to have a half elipse cc opening. I was originally going to make the firebox like this.

However, what would be the negative of leaving the firebox round and just having dead space over the opening like this?

I would say the dead space would cause turbulence in moving heat/smoke into the CC. I would cut it out like a football shape, that is what I do.

Something tells me you might come up with another question? When I cut the throat on my sons 80 gallons RF, I accidently gave it a 1 " filler on the top of the half moon cutout. The concerns then for that small amount were the same regarding smooth airflow. Despite the fears of that happening, I forged ahead against better judgement and eventually had to cut out the extra inch when my volume increased in the CC due to the square doors. Of course it was now welded to the cc and was a huge pita

The gentlemen stating their advice are extremely knowledgeable with substantial experience if your confident...follow thru. If not, rely on someone who can steer through the shallow reef... Now what the hell does that mean?

Funny thing.... Once you meet enough people, you hear more clichés than you can " shake a stick at" ....so to speak

Especially from different areas of the country ...almost like a new language
