throat question

Post by mp4 » May 9th, 2015, 3:45 pm

How important is it (or is it even necessary) to match up the fire box opening to the throat size? I have a 180 gallon tank and should have a 122" throat...I've got that figured out (after a 2nd try) and wonder if it's worth the hassle of matching up the firebox opening under the BP. That opening figures to be 226 inches if it's wide open. Thanks in advance for any help!

You want your throat opening to match the FB opening or be slightly smaller.

For clarification:
The Throat opening is the firebox to cook chamber opening. The baffle plate or reverse flow gap is the at the end of the baffle plate where the heat/smoke enters the upper cook chamber.

I thought the baffle plate gap was the throat, so I had that wrong. Just to be sure I have it right now - the baffle plate gap should be slightly smaller than the fire box opening (throat), right?

Just curious - what's the downside to maxing out the fire box opening (mine would be 226 square inches) and setting the baffle plate gap to the recommended throat size (my figures out to be 122 square inches)?
