rack spacing

Post by Tommygunn » June 16th, 2015, 4:25 pm

I am build a 500 gallon propane tank RF smoker. What is the spacing needed between the racks and RF plate for proper airflow through the cook chamber? Also how far off the bottom do I need to put the RF plate? Thanks in advance.

Most guys run the RF plate at the same height as the top of the FB . The bottom rack should be 2''-5'' above the RF plate.

RF plate being BP?? If so lowest cooking rack and top of BP can be 2-6". BP needs to be at the top of the throat. So heat from the FB has no obstruction thru the throat.

You are correct FC, some guys call the BP a RF plate and I try not to confuse anyone with all the different terminology as long as I know that we are talking about the same thing. :D

I ran my baffle plate 4" below mine and it works good. If I built another one that size I would have it angled to where it was 6" below near the firebox and 3" below on the side farthest away from the firebox to help even out the radiant heat getting to the meat. I don't know how much it will help but if I built another one I would build it that way to test it out. I would also add a drain to it also. You may see if some of the other guys voice their opinion on this idea.

On this point, I can't say for sure about the heat but I can say that the air flow speed does increase in that way. If I'm cooking chicken or turkey all I have to do is angle my trailer tongue up a little and it flows better for more over all heat.
