Patio Smoker Stand Thickness

Post by Simpleaim » December 9th, 2015, 5:30 pm

Hello All,

Getting ready to start building my RF Patio Smoker and I was wondering what does everyone use for the stand? I'm thinking square tube but what size and thickness is the prevailing thought?

Thank you,

Ken

Hello Ken,

I would have to start out by asking you how big the patio smoker you are considering....in most cases I would think 14gauge is adequate and I have always used a box square tubing or a rectangular tubing. Aesthetically it looks the best to me. The 95 gallon smoker I built for my son was supported on one and a half inch square tubing which was 14gauge. It was a sturdy frame and somewhat trapezoidal, being wider at the base. This has worked out quite well.... that smoker is very heavy however I cannot manage it on my own other than to push it. Getting it on to the trailer last Christmas was a monster chore I would suggest it weighed about 400 pounds. I don't know if that helps to guide you any but if you can provide some other specifications you could probably get a more detailed answer.

always the best of luck !

The trapezoid is due to it being top heavy ...it's much more stable while pushing it around

This is what I did, but it makes a difference in how much it weighs. This one is about 650#.Image

Making memories.

Thanks Puff and Rodcrafter!!

I guess it was kind of negligent on my part to not state the size. I'm thinking a 24" x 48" CC, 20x20x22 FB and a warming cabinet. I'm also going to go the square door route like Tuscaloosa Q does in his videos. I like the trapezoid design for stability.

Both of your smokers look GREAT!

Thank you,

Ken

For patio rigs, just about anything you come up with is good. 3/4 x 1/8 angle is cheep and easy to build shelves in to the stand.

Tube is great as long as you can either seal it up tight of drill drain holes at the bottom as it will fill with water and freeze if you live in such a climate. The freeze = swelled tube.

Just saying, trust me i know.

Any reason not to go with angle for the stand? Something like 2x2x0.25"?

Puff - I've got another question. How do you determine the angles on the legs? Is there a math formula?

Thank you,

Ken
