Gasket questions

Post by ACC » September 19th, 2016, 9:14 pm

I need help deciding on the particular type of gasket to use on an insulated firebox. Initially, I was thinking about a ½ fiberglass rope but am now considering a flat fiberglass gasket, maybe 1/8 x1”. What do you guys recommend?

When welding on the vertical hinges, do I need to leave some space between the door and firebox for the gasket to squeeze into? If so, how much?

I like to use the rope gasket because it seals up real tight if your door has a few small gaps. If your door is flat and makes contact with all of the FB, you can definitely use the flat gasket. I've seen several guys on here use it without any issues. I normally install my gasket before I weld the hinges on, I set the door in place and snug it down with a ratchet strap(gently) and the weld the hinges in place. You can use shims to accomplish this also, I'm not sure what the ratio would be seeing as I've never used flat gasket.

I used 3/8 glue on rope gasket, glued the gasket on, and set some plastic wrap on the fb, set the wet door in place. Put a few pounds of weight on while it dried. And also put the weight back on when I welded the hinges. I tried the flat self adhesive gasket on the cc doors, works pretty good on th flat doors.

I used the flat Nomex gaskets, made up some shims that were half the thickness of the gasket(1.6mm for 3mm gasket) out of some steel off cuts cause the gasket does compress. :kewl:

I have a insulated firebox as well. I used the flat gasket and it has held up fine. I used a 1/8 inch gasket so to place the hinges, I taped on a few 1/16 inch washers and snugged the door down with a strap then welded away. The gap worked out perfect.

Thanks for the help everyone. My firebox-door plates are currently matching up well so a flat gasket is probably the easiest to install.

Will a 1/2" wide gasket do the job? I see some gaskets have coatings like graphite or a substance that starts with a "V". Are they really helpful or will an untreated 1000F fiberglass gasket do the job well enough?

Squiggle, where did you find that Avatar? =))

Dirtytires, which particular flat gasket did you use?

I went to the sister site bbqsmokersupply.com- the link is on the main page under parts.

My firebox is flat and fits snug so I went with the self adhesive 1/4 by 1/8 inch from lava rock. It was like $15 bucks for a roll. It has lasted many heat cycles just fine and if it needs replaced, it's easy to scrape off the old and stick on a new one....and it's pretty cheap so I won't feel bad if needed.

Make sure the site is clean and dry. Once it's on it's stuck good so only peal off a bit of backing at a time. I then put a bit of pressure on my door and let sit for 24 hours to get a good seal/adhesion.

And....the purchase helps keep the lights on this site so we all win.

Man, I can't get anything by you, RC.....

You are correct....my beer fingers typed 1/4 inch but the tape measure feels a more accurate size is 1/2 by 1/8th. Sorry for the misinformation.

I would love to come to your area. Maybe you should host a gathering. Then we could all go to the outback and cook some wild stuff you guys have there.

Just to make sure I understand you correctly, you went with the 800F Nomex gasket?

I tend to have to look words up in the dictionary after reading things you say. Paddock was another of those times. Where you live is a whole other world. LOL
