Baffle plate thickness

Post by Mississippi smokin » November 16th, 2016, 12:14 pm

Ok so I've been reading a lot of the posts on here about rf and doing so learned 3/16 is too thin for my bp . So I have acquired some half inch plate and now I'm wondering is this too thick?? Thanks in advance

All I had was 3/16" but enough to double it up (3/8" total). MP4 is spot on. Takes a little longer to heat up but it holds good.

I've used 3/8'' a few times and it works fine, I wouldn't use anything thicker than that.

Well guys it's been a while since I've been able to work on the rf but the time has finally come ! I have so many threads bouncing around I wasn't sure which one to use but since my first order of business is figuring out my bp situation this one seemed appropriate . Here (hopefully) are some pics of the 3/8 plate I want to use for my bp. In my head they will be tunable but maybe that's not a bright idea , I know they are heavy and should seal up ok hen pushed together which is why I'm thinking of not welding them in, it would make them cleanable also. If you see flaw to this please let me know . Like I've said before I'm just a kid that found a new playground here.

I built my fb from 3/16 like a moron , so I'm thinking about tacking so of these plates along the inside . It would also reduce the size which it needs by 50% according to the pit calc . One idea I've had regarding size is to add a false bottom about 5" from the bottom . Not sure if it's a good idea or not . I could slide a couple fire bricks in the void , or if it would work maybe if I put some wood down there it would be like a smoke box.... I have to make a decision about the fb soon though because If I raise the bottom I will need to raise my air inlets as well . Thanks for any ideas guys

I have one just like that without the steel rods. And another with 2" flat bar welded to them so that I could adjust the BP opening. I like both.

Thanks rc I'm going to cut the rods off , I thought about leaving an inch on both sides then welding a piece of rebar in between them for a handle

You can just make another FB and slide it in this one and it will be an insulated FB.

Do I need insulation in the dead space?

Not really the air gap will serve as insulation, if you do insulate it the heat wouldn't radiate beyond the inner plate

Insulation isn't a must. The air gap woks just fine. But if you do line it with brick or the insulation you become much fore fuel efficient. Just my 2 pennies.

Agreed....drinking and typing is bad. Can't 'smoke' without a beer tho!

I have to say that it does seem to go together but not required. It is easier to finish the smoking of a brisket without the beer than with it.
