Reverse flow smoker build "DELUXE"

Post by Tim Brann » January 16th, 2017, 2:31 pm

Just getting started on my RF. So far I have the door cut on the CC and did a burn this weekend. My buddy has access to a water jet cutter so I'm going to get him to cut all my plates for the FB.

Today I worked on the CC door added 1/8 x 1 flat bar around the perimeter to make the flange. Fits like a glove. I have this self adhesive tape to seal up the door. Next I plan working on my hinges and handle. Not sure if I should weld the flat bar solid to the door. Any suggestions?

I normally weld the door solid using small stitch welds, I move around a lot to avoid heat build up. You'll probably be alright with what you have done but if you decide to weld it solid you need to be real careful not to get it too hot or it'll distort very easy as thin as it is.

I just stitch weld the flange, welds are about 1 inch long every 3 inches the gasket will take care of everything.

I plan on sand blasting and painting the entire exterior of the unit after all fabrication is completed. I think what I will do is run a bead of high temp RTV around the flange on the outside of the door and just leave the flange stitched. I started working on the door handle and soon will do my hinges. Wait til you see these babies...

Today I got my handle for the CC completed. I used a section out of a discarded axe handle. Next will be my hinges.

Today I got one of my hinges cut out and cleaned up. Also cut the hole for the chimney. I'm using 4" tubing. I'm wondering how far into the chamber the tubing should extend? Can anyone make a suggestion on best practice for this?

I drop them in just enough to get a good weld around it. That's a wicked looking hinge you've got there.

Coming along nicely. Nice hinge. Keep on keeping on it's getting closer to q-view.

Yeah its like an asbestos but I'm sure its not asbestos material with a self adhesive strip. You just cut your desired length peel of the backing and stick it on.

Has anyone ever used aluminum plate for the BP? I was thinking aluminum has the great inherent tendency to disapate heat more quickly and hopefully more evenly....what do you guys think?

I think the heat would distort it a lot, and the heat wouldn't travel down the whole thing as it should, but I don't have any real experience using it.

Rodcrafter thanks for the comment. I'm going to just stick with carbon steel. Today I picked up my latches, some high temp paint and RTV silicon. Also got a new Weber charcoal chimney. Wow these latches aren't cheap. I will send some pics after I get them mounted.

Just got my CC door tacked to the hinges and the hinges tacked to the CC. It still needs some fine tuning but to my surprise works pretty well. The idea is to have hidden hinges that have their own built in stop and leaves the CC with a clean finished look.
