Did you get the balance you wanted? I asked because there's an easy way to do that if you didn't know I'd share it.

Rodcrafter, I'm not exactly sure if the balance is right. I put 1" round rod in it. The weight holds the lid open and help on opening once it gets over center. Any help would be appreciated.

Please share so that i can use your technique as to how i can get this right. I'm almost at this stage on my build. I'm building a 24x43 offset with tuning plates.

Thanks in advance Bern

What I learned here was to start like you have then just add round stock or re bar as needed to the tube until you get the desired counter weight then weld the ends of the bars to the tube and weld an end plate on it so it look solid and the just right amount of balance is reached.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the the help. I'm not a metal worker so forgive the questions. How do work out the angle of the uprights holding the tube that you would fill with the rebar. Is there an easy way of doing this.

I cut mine on a 30 degree angle. Then made them 18" long. I read that on another post somewhere. It seems to work out nicely on my smoker. I'm pleased with how the counterweight works.

Yes that's a good place to start. The main thing is that it opens up all the way so you don't hit your head on it
