16" x 37" rf smoker build

Post by Welder10 » July 31st, 2017, 5:27 am

I think my addiction to building smokers is in full swing. Lol. I'm thinking I'd like to build a smaller smoker to keep in the back yard go smaller cooks. I have an air tank that's 3/16" thick. Would that make a nice smaller smoker?

This is the numbers I've came up with. Do they look right?

There are a lot of 16'' smokers out there so it'll definitely work. I have found anything under 18'' to be a little tight on head space for some of the larger cuts of meat but you have your trailer rig for stuff like that. I would enter the CC volume as a tank instead of a cylinder because there's a little less volume in a tank than there is in a cylinder because of the bell ends on the tank and that could make your FB a little too big. If you aren't sure how big the tank is(gals) there's a tank calculator that Pete designed in the smoker builder calculator section that can help you figure it out. Good luck and I can't wait to see it come together.

The Wombat is only 14" & its runs very nicely, but as Big T mentioned, it can get a little crowded so square doors are a must, It's perfect for just the family though. Definitely run everything through the other calcs that Pete Mazz has made. :kewl:

I have calculated my throat size as a half moon opening. My figures are 12" x 3 " in height. I'm shooting for 22 sq in. Am I close? And also, is half moon the best cutout for mounting a sq firebox?

That shape is dictated by the shape of the tank, since the FB is square as long as the flat side of the half moon is up you are doing the best in my opinion.

I actually don’t bother with it. If you have a power washer you can get it Perty good if you do it before you put in the baffle. Otherwise hit it with the flap disc and rinse it down. The seasoning process will take care of the rest. Biggest thing is get rid of the big surface stuff.

I hit it with a floppy disk. It had a painted liner in it. Would building a fire on the baffle plate cause any warping of the door?

It could probably stand a small fire seeing as it's 3/16'' thick but I wouldn't get it too hot or you could warp the door.
