Tall FB + Total CC volume

Post by IWantSomeBrisket » January 16th, 2018, 4:02 pm

So getting stuck into the design for a new project and have a couple of questions:

1) For using the calculator for a reverse flow, is the volume under baffle considered part of the cooking chamber? Or only above the baffle i.e. where actual cooking happens

2) Looking at a CC about 37,000in3 so Feldons gives me 12,300in3 for min FB volume. Thing is want to keep footprint of FB down so looking at 20" wide x 20" deep and getting to the required volume by increasing height to 32" high. Any issue with FB being that tall? Still gets the volume required but looking around the usual seems for them to be more square.

Cheers!

Howdy and welcome!
On #1, yes the are under the baffle plate is considered cook chamber volume.
On #2, we have our own calculator we use. it is a little different than the feldon one. ours is located at smokerbuilder.com/pitcalc.
but as far as the height goes, as long as the throat opening is located at the top you are ok. the downside is that would make the cook chamber door opening possibly on the high side. the baffle plate needs to be above the top of the throat opening and the throat near the top. if you add 3" to the distance between the BP and the lowest CC Rack then the bottom of the door would be almost 36" if the bottom of the firebox sits on the ground.

I always heard even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Ouch that sounds terrible. I think DC will be proud though.

Cheers for the quick answer, will get onto the smokerbuilder calcs and figure it out. Am a tall guy so CC can be a little higher than normal, but yeah, still don't want a rack at shoulder height!

I tried to put my grate at normal counter-top height.
