Canadian RF smoker 24x54 3/8

Post by Nickince » August 3rd, 2018, 7:10 am

Good morning. First post here. I’ve been lurking around your forum gathering info for my first build. Using a 24x56 3/8 wall pipe with a 1/4 material firebox. I’m up in Canada where these are less common than down in the US. We are building it for a whole hog roast in a 3 week window! Need it done for Aug 18th! Wish me luck.

I have a friend with a laser cutting CNC table which is making this much easier.

Yep, coming together very nicely.
Nice having machine cut parts... I've a cnc plasma and it makes fabrication so much easier. As DT said, you'd better start organising that hog as you are making such good progress. You might even be able to do a couple of trial runs prior to August 18th. Just to iron out the wrinkles. :kewl:

For sure. Trial runs are a must for me. Will likely spend half a day seasoning and leaning how the pit runs. I’m sure there will be lessons learned. I don’t want to learn them with a big hog in there...

I’m running a vent below the fire grate and another on top of the door. I know the lower will get some ash hit holes are big enough they shouldn’t plug, plus they have air flowing thru them all the time.. see what happens. I also build the firegrate but forgot to add photos will ad some later

Looking good. Nice strong work. Very interesting bottom airvent, it will be interesting to see how well that functions. I don't see an issue, but then again I'm not fully conversant with airflow and such like. I think you will be well setup before your "hog day".

Looks great! You could put an portable ash pan above the vents and just set it in and out as needed.

That’s what I was thinking, like a tin square laundry kind

I used the calculator, and it said only 13 inches for 6 inch. Thats 14 plus the elbow, but I felt it looked short too. Im gonna try it and if its short ive got lots of that 6" pipe, ill extend it.
