TT’s Old Iron Brewery RF Smoker build

Post by TTsOldIron » December 5th, 2018, 10:44 pm

Hello, my name is TT and I am building this smoker from a 500 gal decommissioned propane tank for my new brewery and BBQ restaurant. I have built some smaller smokers before but none as important or big as this is going to be. I’m sure I will have questions and I appreciate all the help i can get. Cheers!

So far I have welded 5 of the sides to the 34x34x34 firebox made from 1/4 Steel that has so far been just scrap I have had around or from the local scrap yard. My plan is to insulate the box since it will be cooking year round up here in the PNW.

So I had some C channel laying in the field waiting for it’s time to become something. It’s time has come, it is going to be the frame that my smoker will sit on. Gotta love free metal!

I need to get on of those fields, with the free steel in it!

Nice start. It’s always great to repurpose stuff.

Ahh a steel growing field. I've heard of those but never seen one. My steel tends to gather behind the shed and together they make a concerted effort to become static sculptures of ferric oxide.

The firebox is getting closer to done. Have to make the ash pan, door and insulation. Hopefully this week I will move the tank in the shop and start cutting into it! Cheers!!!!

It's the way you hold your phone when you take the picture. I have the same issue. Hold it landscape oriented vs portrait and see if that helps. I've had luck cropping and saving pictures then posting the saved ones too...

I got the tank into the shop and safely got the first cut on the tank! It all went pretty smooth, no real issues. It was nice having the overhead crane to hold the end I cut in place. Hopefully I will get to cut the door out tomorrow and then off to get sandblasted.

Media blasting before you start is a great idea in my opinion. Not many do it because of cost and inconvenience but it will make the rest of your build go so much smoother since you won’t be fighting the old coats of paint.

Nice start....

I agree. Really a luxury to work with clean material right off the bat.

Got the tank back from the sandblaster today. I did a mock up with the CC and firebox so I could figure out where to cut out the door opening. So far things are going smooth!

Looks like they forgot to blast the outside. You are getting that thing knocked out fast. When does the brewery open?

What was your reasoning for not blasting the outside?

I didn’t blast the whole tank just because there isn’t much other than the door area I needed down to bare metal and it saved me $100. I am making flat doors to gain a little more cooking surface and won’t have to have any counter balance for the doors.
