Richy's UDS Build

Post by richy20 » July 2nd, 2018, 5:43 pm

Well guys I built a mini GF last year and now I need something a little bit more portable for smaller cooks. I plan on building a 55gal UDS with 3ea 1" intakes and putting the racks and fire baffles per the attached image. Does anyone have any comments on my fire baffle placement? Or the second cooking grate? Any tips or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I also plan on using this Weber Smokey Mountain 22" bottom Kettle that I got on Craigslist for $10.

placement looks good...I might drop the top rack an inch or so but depends on what you want to cook.

Looking good.

With that dome you don't need to worry what you're cooking, unless it's still alive.

Was your drum sealed when u got it or was the top already off? I have a 55 gallon food container that’s sealed and I need the top off to start a build.

If you grind the top edge of the drum "lid"... carefully. It will come off quite easily. Don't get too aggressive as you don't want to destroy the rim on the actual drum.

I'm pretty sure Frank had a video of how to remove it but I couldn't find it. Go to youtube and type in drum lid removal and there's a 21 second video that explains it.

Sorry mate, I don't have any pics of the process. Where the top of the drum (lid) rolls over the body. Take an angle grinder with a grinding disk... not a flap disk and gently grind around the top edges. Eventually the metal will separate. When they made the drum they used mechanical means to roll it over. All you are doing is cutting through the top layer of roll-over.

I cut round mine an inch down from rim then flared the flange on the lid to slip over the top of the drum

Mine is an open lid barrel. The picture was of the bottom where the intakes go. But it looks like you got it figured out :kewl:

It finally stopped raining and I could finally get you some Q view. I had some issues with only having 2 gun barrels but fixed that. Here are the remaining pictures that are long over due. This project was really fun and it did not take too much time. It took me longer to wait for a nice weekend to smoke because it kept raining or I was working weekends.

With only two 3/4" gun barrels i couldnt get past 270degrees. So I had to add 2more which sucked and took more time.

Those are some serious welds on the hinge...pretty sure it’s not going to come apart!

Looks great....nice build.
