RCDS Design Concept

Post by Kansafornian » June 28th, 2012, 1:42 pm

I've been working on the conceptual design the past few days; provided the feedback and
insights of the collective group. Given the volume of information and the mandates set, I've
come up with the following:

Image

Admittedly, there may be a little overkill in a few areas and the internals - to include the
diffuser - are not shown, But, generally speaking, I'm planning to build what you see. (In fact
I've collected nearly all of the pieces necessary to begin the build immediately; if not sooner).

And for those likely to ask, yes, the trolly is designed to be permanently affixed. And I'm
considering a 1 7/8 ball hitch to tow it around on the golf cart (not shown; the golf cart
nor the hitch...)

Aside from the Maverick (not shown) and internals (again not shown), what am I missing? I
did include a bottle opener and cap catch because, imho, Beer & BBQ are tied together
closer than peas & carrots.

Btw, a .22 cal pellet effectively "suspended indefinitely" the Raider of my lost Sunflowers
last evening. He poked his twitching bushy tail out, happily biting through the plant's stem
in an effort to steel the nearly ripened flower until it was "lights out Chi-town" as the .22
pellet canoed his cranium. (My 11 year old is quite the marksman. He about danced a jig
after the shot.)

An aside: My quite liberal neighbor is none too pleased that Rocky met 'an early demise' and
made a point to tell me so this morning when Rocky didn't show for his usual acrobatics show
atop my bird feeders; at which time the aforementioned shot was discussed. Given his dismay,
I'm really considering Rocky for the RCDS's ("Rock Chalk Drum Smoker") inaugural smoking. If
I do, I'll be sure to invite the neighbor over for dinner that night...

Dude! you kill me! That was a funny freakin story and I support your decision to include Rocky in your inaugural smoke on the RCDS....
Furthermore, I think it to be essential that your neighbor is also present during the ceremony.... :points:

Okay I like this design - a little overkill is a good thing so here's a couple more thoughts...

1) You could make the top of the dolly unplugable so you can remove easily while cooking and these won't be in your way. 3/4 inch square tube will slide into thin-wall 1" tube - jesus clips and you're there...

2) Could be wrong but I think you can go with just one t-gauge cause I think those 2 will read the same anyway being that close together.

3) I've had "Rocky" before so he should prolly have about 6 hours soaking in Wishbone Italian dressing before rubbing him down and cooking - 1.5 hours smoke then foil - core temp up to 165 and pull and wrap in towels and into cooler for about 2 hours - should be tender then... :D

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

Sweet idea Rick! Never thought to make this trolley top removable; but it makes perfect sense to do so. I'll look into the clip option at HD over the weekend.

You' re probably right on the multi-therms. Like the ideas . Now its... Back to redesign land!

Also, thanks for the Rocky recipe!! I've grilled'm before, but never smoked one. Best to try a proven recipe; especially given the participants and gravity of the event.

Frank: When I suggested the dinner outing to the wife, she cringed, got a quizzical look on her face, then laughed hysterically, picked up a calendar and asked "Which July dates work best!! (You've of course heard of Kalifornication? Well... For my Cali-born-Lass I appear to be proving the opposite affect can also be true. Can I get an "Amen!" for Kansafornication?! I think I hear a distant backwoods choir...)

My 11 yr old - overhearing the conversation - offered to add Ranger Rick to the plated meat list. I thinks he's cleaned up that interminable raccoon's disembowelment of my trashcan once too often. I won't be surprised to find him set up like a Seal Team-6 sniper with clear lines of site on the garbage bin come nightfall; raking the area with his pellet gun's laser, painted up and ghillie-suited look'n for Bin Trash'n (his avowed enemy operative) to pop up on the radar, ready to anchor him should he be so unlucky as to climb that can for the last hurrah.

Now, I've never smoked a coon before but - for my neighbors sake and his general well being (of course!) - should the ranger's chapeau end up grounded I'll almost have to give'r a run. I mean, it's the honorable thing to do, right?

At this point, we're considering names for the dinner party. (No, not for us and we're not setting up a key-bowl...) "Backyard BBQ" is too generic, IMHO, and I'm looking for suggestions?

From the AP wire: 'The sanctioned hit on Bin Trash'n must have been leaked (no doubt by one of his trash bin savaging colleagues) as he's nowhere to be found; likely back in Tora Bora eating bonbons and pilfered cat food. "Rambo Jr." has begun a search of other neighborhood properties for evidence of travel. Officials believe his driver will pop-up somewhere or we'll get UAV images in the near term...'

RCDS build note: I've collected all of the pieces/parts and should have a functionally completed barral by mid-July. And, given the previous requests for the same... I'll take some pictures and post those over the next couple days.

Working under the assumption that coon baiting is not frowned on, it might be a forgotten art outside of the deep south. I would suggest a combination of a punctured can of day old sun warmed tuna with a handfull of marshmallows strung up on some nylon cord. The tuna will draw the varmint in and the struggle to retrieve the marshmallows will hold him in the kill zone. It's worth noting that coon is a bit greasy so treat him like a low grade butt and don't foil too early. If you are going for style points, the racer position with 1 paw forward and both rear legs tucked is a classic presentation.

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

If it's tradition to place an apple into the mouth of a trussed, smoked hog, what's 'traditionally' put into the toothy jaws of a smoked coon 'en position racer'?

Kibbles & Bits box?
Sardine tin?
Empty Quaker State can?
Perhaps... a smoked squirrel?

Enquiring minds...

A backwoods bayou surf-n-turf: "Racer coon & mud-bugs".
Nice! Is that best served with fried okra? :chef:

All I need is some pics of this cook and I'm voting for Que of the year :points:

grilled okra with some nice char marks dusted with ceyenne pepper and garlic salt would be the finishing touch no doubt :kewl:

QUAKER STATE CAN?!!! man your're killin me! I almost peed myself! where do you get this stuff?

On another note I think it best to put the squirrel in the coon's mouth and place a Pay Day bar in the squirrels mouth leaving the plastic wrapper near by on the plated meal so the coon would look to been trying to get the wrapper from the squirrel...

You're making this WAAAY too difficult - just de-bone it - boil it and mix it with some Roadkill Helper...

You could always stuff the de-boned coon with the trimmed out squirrel. Kind of like a redneck take on turduckin.
"Racquirel" But still racer style just for that classy touch :needfood:
