Getting started with my build

Post by machinerepairman » October 9th, 2011, 1:00 pm

I finally found a food grade open lid drum and I'm gonna do a burnout with my weed burner. The first question is, do I need to completely burnout the orange lining on the inside, second, can I just wire wheel what doesn't get burned out. Any help is appreciated.

Go ahead and drill your inlet air holes first, then build a good fire in it with whatever wood you can find and burn it real hot. After the pai t is gone off the outside then use comet on the inside to remove the rest of the liner )

Thanks frank. I burned it out with my LP weed torch and it got all the outside and most of the inside liner out. I will pick up some comet tomorrow while I'm searching for a Webber grate. Its coming out good so far. I'm looking forward to seasoning this thing. :D

Awesome to hear its coming along.

I have heard nothing but good things about using the comet, so please let us know how well it works for you. Since every drum is different I always like to hear of another success story with the comet.

The comet wasn't working as well as I had hoped, so I put a scotchbrite pad on a air sander and its completely out now. I sprayed the outside of it with grill paint, coated the inside with vegetable oil, and seasoned it today with a tin pan full of charcoal and hickory chunks. I still need a grate, charcoal basket and ball valve. I will post some piece when its done.
