u.d.s. fire basket

Post by Leonard » March 4th, 2013, 1:38 pm

I`am in the process of building my 3rd u.d.s. , the question i have is that a close friend of mine gave me a large granite coated ( grey speckled ) pot with a handle on it , it is a great size for a charcoal basket , i`am asking if it would be safe to use for this , after drilling proper holes for ventilation and bolting leg`s on it to stand in the drum , my concern is that would it emit any toxic fume`s from the heat . thank`s for any advice for this and any answer`s im just courious about using something like this ,,,,,,

If memory serves, (and it usually doesn't) the porcelainizing process uses temperatures considerable north of what a fire basket would run.

The porcelain might try to delaminate from the substrate.

WOW! ... where did that come from?

Anyway ... It might flake apart but I don't think there's any toxic concerns there... maybe all you're out is an old free pot to find out.

I'll be the negative Nancy here. Why risk it? I know the pot is old and you don't care about it, but if it does off gas something nasty at the very least you will ruin dinner and the worst make somebody sick. I am over cautious about this kind of stuff.

Now there's way to many large words in this thread
