Well here is the beginning of a UDS it is 21" tall from bottom to top of handle basket is actually 12" tall I think I need to do something different with the handle because I think it is to tall for me to be able to put 2 grill grates a top and bottom or a grill grate and a shadow plate what do y'all think

Basket looks good. Tack a chain on for your handle then you'll have plenty of room for your grates.

Looks great. I would make the handle swivel to you can lay it down and move it out of the way. Something else to think about is changing the design to the basket is elevated with a ash pan underneath.

Nice looking basket, I built a mini UDS and love it. Can't wait to get the full size done so I have more smoking room.

Around 3 inches. You want enough space so air can circulate after ashes start to fall.

BBQ is just smoke and beers!
Usually more beers than smoke.

I run 3 5" carriage bolts through my ash pan. Keep your ash pan 1" from the floor and 3" below my basket.

Keep in mind you may need to make the basket a little shorter if you want 2 racks in your UDS
