Just purchased a drum with red interior?

Post by Mississippi smokin » November 26th, 2016, 7:06 pm

Hey guys I just purchased a 55 gallon metal drum that I plan on turning into a uds. The drum is in perfect condition , the guy said it used to hold apple juice. 25$ seemed like a good deal to me so I snatched her up. Now I'm looking at the inside of the drum and it's red, not a stain but maybe some coating or something I'm not sure.. Can I just burn it out or is this not a good one to smoke with? Thanks in advance for the help

The general consensus on that site was the liner was safe to leave in, wondering how you guys feel about that

I would be in the sandblast/beadblast camp but paranoia is my only supporting evidence.

Here are a couple pics I found of different style smokers wondering which one you fine fellows prefer

I think I'm leaning more towards the vertical uds style

If it's got an epoxy interior it'll be a pain to remove. Try the burn test first.

I'd go UDS all day. Proven design and readily gotten parts.

I'm not sure about plans for a UDS but they're about as simple as it gets. There's plenty of builds in the UDS section with pictures and tons of videos on the internet. Here's a link to all of the parts that you'll need to build one http://bbqsmokersupply.com/uds-parts.html

I ran across some one inch pipe for free this morning . Will that be ok instead of 3/4?

:yth: You can use whatever you have available. I've used 4- 3/4'' intakes and I've used 2- 1 1/2'' intakes. You can always close off what you don't need and you won't need much once it's up to temp. I like to have intakes on different sides so that the wind doesn't blow directly into them.
