Build two, first UDS

Post by YTQBBQINC » February 17th, 2018, 1:18 am

Ok, so until I have my trailer to the point of mounting the old rib wagon, using it is a pain due to the slope and 1” lip going into my shop (takes 4+ people to get it back in).

Solution...build a UDS. I have a pretty good idea on how this build is going to go. Got my parts coming and all that. I have one issue. My drum is lined and we’re under a multiple county burn ban. I have soy gel from my day job that’ll remove the paint inside and out but I’d rather burn it off than us chemicals. The only loop hole I can come up with is pull the plugs on the lid, force air in through the bottom (like in Frank’s vid) and do the burn with the lid on. At least that way when my crazy neighbor calls the cops I can say it’s not an open burn. Any one ever try that or have any thoughts on the matter? I think it would work but not 100%.

Alternativley you can get it blasted. Soda blasting or bead blasting should get the lining out. And once you have the unit built you can season it with lid and all the bits in place. Burning it out does not do a better job than other methods it's just generally easier in a D.I.Y environment and of course gives us a reason to play with fire... :D

Good point. Having it blasted didn’t even cross my mind. Thank you much.

You have to be careful not to warp the lid. I start with unlined drums but many don’t. So burn it with the vacuum blowing in the air vent hole and when it cools they say it comes right out with ajax or comet.

Well, I think I’m going to try using my ditch burner. It’s 800,000BTU so I think it’ll burn off the exterior pretty easy and hopefully simultaneously burn off the interior. We’ll see.

Well the torch is slow but it works so I’ll try and finish up burning the rest of the paint off tonight and or tomorrow. Called a couple sandblast places and they wanted $100. Don’t think so. The parts I ordered from udsparts.com should be showing up tomorrow so I went ahead and drilled all the holes I want in it so I can at least mock everything up. Still have to get the U bolt for the pipe though. Since I have the two guru setups for my big smoker I’ll be setting this one up for a guru as well.

Little off topic but still in the process of stripping off the paint on the old Yummy Tummy Rib Wagon as you can see. Plan is to strip all the paint off, do a proper prep job this time and then coat it in cerakote glacier black. Decided on that because it’s an air cure coating and has a heat and shock rating up to 2000 degrees. I’ll post pics of that in the other thread once it’s finished.

I wouldn't pay that much to have several sand blasted. I can buy a brand new drum without a liner for 60 or a stainless one for 100 so there is that.

This is as good as I could get it using a torch, angle die grinder, and then scrubbing it out. Hopefully it’s good enough. Going with gray and black for the colors. Have a couple plugs for the two other holes in the lid showing up at some point today.

Got a couple more after thought holes I have to drill but for my first one, I’m happy with how it’s coming out. Can’t wait to fire it up. ImageImageImageImage

Thank you much. I’m interested in seeing how it works. Never cooked on one before and not 100% on how the guru will work with it. Guess I’ll find that out when I season it.

Wind was blowing the plastic up so I grabbed the closest things I could find. Just happened to be fire extinguishers and jugs of used motor oil. Haha

Thank you sir. Going to let the paint cure for at least three days before seasoning it, maybe Friday. Here’s pretty much the final setup. Turned on the guru and it is getting good air flow so I think it’ll work good. Since I’m forcing air into the drum I may put screen in the bottom of the 14-40 to prevent the guru from pushing ash out. I don’t think it’s going to be pushing a lot of air once it’s up to temp but who knows. ImageImage

Let it be known that from this day till forever more, The Czar is not allowed near any of my smokers that have yet to be seasoned! Possibly after. Maybe if he keeps his hands in his pockets. Maybe. Image

Got a last minute call and have to be in St. Louis ready to work on Monday so I wasn’t able to season it today. Spent most of the day getting things ready but I will be firing it up tomorrow. We’ll see how it holds up and works.

Shot up over 300 as soon as I put the lid on but it’s settled down to 275 where I’ll be holding it for the next couple hour. Not sure if that’s just what they do or if there’s a trick to it but it seems to be doing well. Pretty big fan of that 14-40 basket. I’ll be trying a brisket out on it when I get back to Amarillo. Pretty sure this won’t be the last one I throw together. ImageImage
