Smokin' Johnny

Post by Gizmo » September 23rd, 2012, 5:03 pm

Some of you may remember a photo I posted of this tank and a couple discs from last spring. It's a 100# propane tank I talked the father-in-law out of and sandblasted and there it sat in the corner of the shop. I never could get the math to work as a vertical so I changed direction. Here's my first theme build... see if you recognize it when it gets a little further along.

Measured and marked all the cuts for my buddy with the plasma cutter ...

Image

Welded an end plate on (ugly - but effective) ...
Image

Bolted on an 055 drive unit from the easybake twins project to help with fitting ... and added a couple BP short rails ...
Image

Installed a hot plate ...
Image

First section of the removable baffle plate ...
Image

Second section of the removable baffle plate ...
Image

Welded an extra rod under 2 Junior grates and cut them off to fit in the new tank ...
Image

Grate completed ...

And on the eighth day God created barbecue …. because he DOES love us and he wants us to be happy. :D

What is this, I must have missed something?

"Bolted on an 055 drive unit from the easybake twins project to help with fitting"

I like how you are allowing the smoke to come in on the sides, since the grates are so close to the BP. Nice job!

Sorry Rodcrafter - an 055 is the model number for a Traeger Junior - their smallest and lowest priced unit and this is the pellet drive off of one of those models that will be going into a totally unrelated build I call the EasyBake Twins (different thread - stay tuned).

Until I got it cut and bolted in I didn't realize how little height I had to work with - anyway this should work about the same as the original - we'll see ...

Sort of an end-fed RF/UDS contraption ... if it were a dog it would be a mongrel :D

Welded an angle iron tab in the back of the cook chamber about midway...
Image

Mounted the probe to it....
Image

Cut and installed a piece of 5/16" brake line to protect the wire from accidents ...
Image

Completed probe mount ...
Image

Now I just need a small cover to dress up the outside and finish the trip to the drive unit ...

Don't have much time tonight but I wanted to get at least a little done...
I wish I could remember who to credit with this idea but it's in here somewheres....
Had to use the tank to bend some hoops to use later while the tank is still "rollable"
Image

Surprisingly easy to do - and barehanded - no hammer needed.... gues that's why they call it mild steel...
Image

3 total - 1 for the door frame and 2 to hold the tank.
Image

I wonder if this will work to align the door...
Image

Well what do you know... it did.... more later :D

Fun to watch ... not a clue what I'm watching but fun none the less. I'm like the kid who realizes he was on a field trip as the class leaves the zoo parking lot. I'm hoping for subtitles or maybe I just wait until its finished and do the thread backwards. :D It aint easy being this dense

If it can't be smoked .... try frying it. It that don't work, it's probably best just left alone

Got some more work done yesterday.....
Image

Glad the door didn't have a memory at all...
Image

Handle brackets were a pain - plasma cutter's looking like a better idea all the time....
Image

That's gonna be an axle...
Image

And that's an axle too ...
Image

...but it needs some more camber...
Image

Starting to look like something now ...
Image

Can't have a cooker without a guage!
