Anybody have a favorite gage to use when building your smoker?

Tel tru.

Pros: Heavy probe, solid mounting nut, available in several face colors to fit your theme (black, silver or glow in dark), made in usa, several probe lengths and dial diameters available.

Cons: expensive at around $60 for gauge, mounting nut and shipping, non adjustable

Conclusion....I love mine...and I own several.

Squiggle has this right. First preference is Tel-Tru but to save a few bucks you can always go with River Country. I tested the River Country and they came without the need to calibrate. I did the boiling water test to see where the temps held and it was spot on. I've been happy with mine. I ended up installing 4 in my horizontal offset and they've worked well. i'm in the middl of adding a second level of racks so I'll be picking up some more to add this week.

Glad to see Giz back. Enjoyed your Tarts this past wkend!

River Country has a screw to calibrate them. Lesson learned a flashlight held on the glow in the darks will make them glow in the dark...I haven't had much luck with sunlight making them glow at night. You can even make them look like a 1-eyed beagle

Hi Gizmo!!!! Glad you're back!!!!
yep like everybody else said, Tel-Tru are hands down the best if ya wanna spend the money and only downside is they are not adjustable. I did speak to one of the engineers at Tel-Tru a couple years ago asking about the calibration process and they use a hot oil bath which is more consistent at different temps. they use a 3 temp check procedure to test hi, medium, and low.
That in itself is fine I suppose but this lead me to thinking about the conductivity of different fluids....
I have noticed that almost every one of them I have tested and used on my own smokers were off by 25*F colder then what the pit actually was If I tested with my high dollar digital at the end of the probe. This s the main reason we do not sell that thermo anymore. The engineers could not change the model we were using to be calibrated.
I have since started using the River Country one for now until I get a new one made with our logo etc....
It will need to be a Bad A$$ thermo before we logo it lol

Thanks guys! - all your comments remind me of the good ole days when I had time to check in here. I'm trying to re-align my priorities to do more with the forum and smokerbuilding. I guess "I'm working my way back to 'Q' babe..." sorry - slipped into a song there for a minute .... :D

I didn't see any of Franks grits on here - foiled or otherwise ....
