mock up, still not completely standing on its own, and it will be about 8-1/2" taller when wheels go on.

Awesome work! I can't wait to see some of your cooks! Follow up question regarding the smoke stack at center level of the CC.
For the length of the stack should we only measure the vertical height of the stack or vertical height plus radius of CC (if stack at center level)?

From what i understand, only the stack portion that is above the cook chamber gets measured.

Some progress -
front end is pretty much done, and the pit stands on its own now. Got the door cut out and hinges done. Gotta work on flanges/gasket, and getting the stack on so I can move on to grates, tuning plates, and firebox door.

I didn't really want to deal with a sprung door, so I crawled in the cook chamber before I attached firebox and welded 3 gussets inside. I used a grinder to cut out small notches where my door would be to help me line the gussets up in the correct spot. this worked, the door did not spring. all the welding of patches where the valves and connections were on the tank cause part of the cook chamber to squeeze in some, but I hope I can push it out with a jack and weld a grate support in that place.

Metal is funny. Hope the supports worked but don’t be surprised if it moves some when you remove them to put in your shelves. It can be easily fixed however so dont panic if it does. Project is looking really great and coming together nicely.

I was thinking it still might move, so I may leave the supports on it forever

Looking good. I like the wheels. Adds a nice touch.

They will cut into rack space....I’d cut them out and take the risk.

Thanks for all the encouragement and help. Maybe I’ll get it finished here in a few weeks, in time for fall and football.

Last major decision - 5” or 6” stack, and up top or out the middle (grate). I cannot decide

What is your stack volume? The larger the inside diameter, the shorter the stack needs to be. It is advisable to get the stack up above your head so you don’t have smoke rolling in your face. My guess is that 6 inch dia will make it pretty short.

a little more progress. Got my stack on, went with the 6" but cut it down some. Got my door flanges on, both stops, a spinning stainless handle that took forever to get just right. I must've tacked and cut and tacked at least 6 times. Also got my lower grate slides in, and deflector near the firebox. Have one cooking grate framed, need to do the others and add the top slides, then on to the firebox door! Starting to see the light here....
