New 500 gallon build!

Post by gijsveltman » October 23rd, 2019, 6:21 pm

Hello everyone! I built a 250 gallon earlier this year, and I have been using it for some catering jobs and such, and I really, really like it. I’ve been wanting to build a larger standard offset and recently had the possibility to buy these two tanks for a very attractive price. They are a 500 gallon (red one) and a 250 gallon (white one to the right):

It shall be called the Red Dragon! I will use the white one as the firebox, but was wondering if you guys can share tips as to how to attach two cylindrical tanks?

thanks!

Gijs

Easiest way for an offset is to cut the bell ends off and make a plate

I was kidding about the over n under smoker pic.
In reality I recommend getting a set of plans from smokerbuider to build the perfect smoker. They’ve got 100’s to choose from

Assume you have found it already but the calculator on this site will tell you what size firebox you need and the required opening between the two.

I agree with Pete. You're going to have to cut the smaller tank down to the recommended size so you might as well just cut the bell off of the CC and use a plate to connect them.

And then make some discos or fire pits with the bells

Use a piece of 24” pipe as a template. That’s how I’ve done it. I have a scrap piece if 24” pipe that I cut to 1” wide and use it specifically for this. A 250 will fit good up to a 500 gallon tank.

thanks for your comments! I’ve been crunching some numbers in the calculator. I’ve got a 500 gallon tank, 37.88inch diameter I’m using as a cook chamber. And I’ve got a 250 gallon tank, 29 inch diameter. According to the calculator, the FB should be 65 inches long, but that seems HUGE to me when I look at it! Am I missing something?

It's all based off of a required volume so that sounds about right seeing the difference in diameter between the two tanks. That's one of the reasons that some the guys were saying that they would build a square firebox because the wider FB will cut down on the length.
