Oh my Gawd!!! I have one thing left on my punch list, the water pan filler tube - and I can go get the parts for it tomorrow. :D Cool looking build!

Thanks Hogaboomer. Lots left but this is all fun. I’d quit my job and do this full time if I could lol

Haven’t posted an update in a few days but I’ve been busy. I was going to take it in and get I’m the whole thing sandblasted. My neighbor offered to lend me his gravity fed sandblaster so I gave that a try. 3 days later ... I’m still picking sand out of my ears and I decided to just strip the trailer and sand and buff the smoker w my pneumatic angle grinder. Kind of looks like black chrome. Gonna hit it with a few coats of high heat clear paint and do the trailer in black.
I also got the door to the WC framed out and hung on hinges. I need to sand and buff it to match the rest. All in all, lots of work but happy with the turn out.

You have to do a ships wheel or bank vault wheel on that fire box door.......1/4 turn twist lock.

Grabbed a Bosch laser level on sale for $50 yesterday. Made short work of laying out the smoke collector. Feels like money well spent.

I can think of a few times that it would've been nice to have one of those.

Hard to spend $50 on a level, but man was it easy to lay out those cut lines.

Welding flat metal onto curved tanks is a challenge! Tackled some daunting tasks today.
- Built the smoke collector and welded up the stack.
- Put a small stack on top of the WC.
- Built the hinge and hung the FB door.
I ended up tacking the door in place while I fit up the hinge. Added a couple washers to the hinge pins as bushings to keep it steady. She’s rock solid.

Got a real booger on the top left of the smoke collector the needs a touch w the grinder. Must have dozed off while I was running that one LOL.

2nd Build - Tank Offset Trailer Build

Post by dacolson » June 16th, 2020, 10:04 pm

Well, I had a repeat in the cook chamber of the rust issues I ran into in the warming chamber. Most of the bottom has some serious pits that came to light after some aggressive wire wheeling. Rather than cut it all out and try to get a large curved patch, I just cut a 7x36” piece of 3/16” steel and welded it onto the bottom of the CC to cover it all up. Welded it up real tight to prevent any more damage/preserve the exterior on the bottom of the CC. I’ll be avoiding used air tanks in the future I think.

On the progress side, I finished the cook rack and bent up some round stock in the initials of my buddy I’m building this for as door stops. Not sure if I like them or not. Feedback welcome. Might redo them smaller.

I’m thinking smaller. They don’t look so big in person but they really dominate the top. They don’t really go with the design of the build either. I may scrap them and just make a brand with the initials instead.

Made the grill grates for the warming chamber today. Put a bunch of slots in the top of a piece of angle and bent them into two 16 inch diameter hoops.

Image

I reused some expanded metal from an old patio table for the grates. Tacked in some small pieces of steel rod as the supports.

The round grates look like they were a lot of work but they look great!
