Sourcing large pipe

Post by trekkinglab » January 26th, 2021, 1:49 pm

I am looking for a 20" od schedule 40 but I am having a hard time finding it locally. My metal supply can order but it's 20'.
Where do you guys source it? Are there any alternatives, like rolling a sheet?
Thanks

I haven't had luck finding anyone to roll sheet/plate around me. My best bets have been from FB Marketplace, Craigslist and from a local steel supplier who will sell drops for cheap. If you find someone on marketplace or craigslist who has a piece of pipe like that, ask them to let you know if they find another. Could be a good source for future purchases. I found a guy who's brother is a pipe fitter for the gas company. He has ready access to good sized drops for cheap. It's taken me 2 years to build up any sort of network but I'm having more luck now finding material when I'm ready instead of buying it when it shows up. Propane tanks are another good source. Check with steel scrap yards and with your propane company. Sometimes they will sell salvage tanks.

I’ve got a place here locally that will sell whatever you want and saw-cut to the exact length you want. Gotta look around for pipe supply houses as most steel yards don’t carry that big of material.
