Hinges question

Post by breavis » February 20th, 2021, 7:05 pm

I plan to start building a cooker out of a 250 gallon oil drum soon plus a co-worker has asked me about making him one also. I mostly have made smokers/grills/cookers out of 55 gallon drums and I make hinges out of round rod & pipe. I usually use 2 for the hood but the bigger smokers I'm thinking would be better with 4. Do you think this would work or should I use something else?

I have made the same style hinges many times and they work fine. I recently started using bullet hinges, they're fairly inexpensive and they'll hold a lot of weight. You could go either way and not have any problems.

Measure Twice.....Cut Three Times.

Increasing the number of hinges helps to spread out the load on each but also means you need to be more accurate in placement or they will bind up.
