I have a wood stove in my house that burns it's smoke......the fire has to be really hot in order for that secondary air intake to light the smoke and burn. I have fires that show no flame on the wood but the smoke is lit and flaming above the logs. To get that you have to get a hot fire going then damper it down so the logs smoke and then the smoke burns above the logs. I would think a smoker that has to get that hot to only cool the air back down would be a waste. And isn't the smoke what we want???? Don't go burning up my thing blue smoke before I get to drape it over my meat!!!!

I'm glad to hear from you guys about wood stoves! We don't have many if those down here in my part of Texas so I appreciate the insight.
