120 Gallon Propane Tank

Post by Coach Cherry » May 12th, 2021, 9:13 am

Hello!

Quick question here I have a 120 Gallon propane tank. I am not an experienced welder or metal worker. I was wondering if anyone has simply cut off 1/3 of their propane tank and then turned it around and used it for there Fire Box. The BBQ calculator says that firebox should be roughly 1/3 of the cook chamber..."Primitive Pits" has a model that looks like that is what he done. Just curious if any of y'all have done this. Trying to uikld asmoker with minimal welding!

That can definitely be done. That leaves you with a round firebox, which is fine, but means you have circles to cut for endcaps and a door to fit on a circle. Not hard, but cutting circles is a challenge for many new to working with metal.

You need to cut a tank by 26% to wind up with the right size FB.
