I was looking on another pit builder site and they say an upper and lower air intake on the firebox helps control the temps better. He says the lower intake controls the heat of the fire, and the upper is for airflow into the CC. Any of you guys ever heard this?

I read the same thing. Some thought that introducing air above the fire helps to burn off unburned wood gasses that contribute to dirty smoke. I did this on my first build:

I rebuilt the front door w thicker steel as this one warped a bit and eliminated the top vents and saw no difference. Hard to say one way or the other.

Finally sold that Santa Maria this morning. Only took 9 weeks and priced at $350. :BDHorse:

He's claiming that it does away with your hot spots, like right next to the firebox, or in my case closer to the stack. I was thinking about putting a deflector on the roof of the cook chamber to try and change the heat flow somehow, but I believe I'll try the vents first.

And thanks, Brewmaster! I'm ready to see some more cooks on it, too. Just finishing up the base and some other little odds and ends first. I'm debating just putting a piece of plywood for the base rack instead of expanded metal, save that for something else.

Try messing with your stack damper. I run mine at about 2/3 closed most of the time. If it gets too hot by the stack I close it a little more (just a fraction at a time) and the heat evens out.

I've seen the opposite, a chap on another forum modded his Yoder with a top vent to bottom vent only, as he noticed the top vent had scorch marks above it and heat was coming straight back out the top vent. He was struggling keeping a decent coal bed until he changed to big bottom vent only.

Was a long time ago I read that, will see if I can find it again.

I got the stack finished up and made up a door stop. Only thing left to do is get it nice and hot to wire wheel everything good and shiny, put the boiled linseed oil on, weld the door stop on, and done.

Idiot proofed my tape, made me a baby jack stand, and worked on the firebox fit up. I welded on the smoke collector on the other end, but forgot to get a pic.

I need to cook something on it, see if I can get that linseed oil to dry up.

Bes' get to it before she gets dusty! :-) Would love to see more pics of your Jambo-style throat deflector too.

Re your comment about a deflector - We almost did the Jambo-type throat to Stainley but ultimately decided not to. Considered either a 45 degree deflector up top, or a rounded/curved deflector up there, so the heat and gases being driven straight up would make a smoother transition in the right direction. Assuming you're thinking along the same lines?

Already too late on the dust.
