120 Gal On Golf Cart Tires

Post by Rafster » April 8th, 2022, 8:57 am

Hey guys, long time lurker and occasional poster. This will be my second build, my first was a 100lb propane tank cook chamber with a 30 lb propane tank for the FB. It was an awesome learning experience on what to do and not to do with a build.

This second build will be a 120 gallon propane tank on a cart with golf cart tires. The goal is to be able to pull it around my yard and trailer it to other locations as necessary. The firebox will be built of of 3/16” plate as it is what was available as “head and feet” at my local steel supplier. I will also post links to where I secured my supplies from as I know it helps other potential builders get an idea for their pits.

I am a hobby welder by trade and I. Only have a TIG welder. Attached are photos of my progress thus far.

For my wheels, tires, and associated spindles, I used the products below. Prices are always fluctuating, but I found it easiest to order theses and have them delivered. For the spindles and hubs, I purchased 5 so that I could use the 5th one for my steering assembly.

Judging the steering angle for the cart. A lot of cars go to 30+ degrees of angle, so I used that as a baseline to ensure stability. I realize that it isn’t necessary, but I wanted to avoid any issues that could arise from the 360 degree rotatable assemblies that some smokers have.

For the base, I built a 6’ x 18” rectangle out of 2” square 3/16” thick tubing. The idea is the propane tank is approximately 69” long from the furthest points with each bell being approximately 4.5” deep. The FB will be 24” square and will attach to the propane tank where the bell meets the rest of the tank. This gives me 5’ under tank for storage and 1’ Uber the firebox for additional support.

The steering will use a circular weld-in spindle that I notched for additional surface area to weld. I did not plan accordingly when I ordered my spindles and could only source a circular one locally.

To support the mounting of the hub to the frame, I boxed in a 6” x 6” square of tubing for the hub to sit in. The hub face is 5” across, so I gave myself .5” of wiggle room to ensure figment. I used the same 2” square tubing to creat the boxes in section.

I then cut a 7” square of 1/8” plate and (should have) used a 3” hole saw to pass the hub through the plate. I say should have , because I wound up using an angle grinder to make the hole since I did not have the right sized hole saw…

Using a step bit I created the holes for the hub lugs to pass through, and ensured figment.

The 7” square plate was then centered on the 6” square built into the base giving me .5” of overlap on all sides for welding.

Once everything was tacked together, I attached the hub to the frame and the notched spindle to the axle.

For welding on the rear axle, I measured the distance of the front axle to the base of the frame on both sides to establish what sized spacers I needed.

Once the frame was all tacked together, it needed to pass rigorous testing. So I did what any responsible human would do. I had my friend sit on the frame with his feet on the axles for steering as I pushed him up and down the street. Once we stablished it was structurally sound, we needed to ensure it could hold the proper weight. So I pushed the cart as fast as I could and then hopped on the back as we rode up and down the street.

You know… for science…
