30 x 48 Offset

Post by Mettle » February 12th, 2013, 9:25 am

Just finished with my 30 x 48 offset (was a ridiculous grill). 4 inch id chimney. 20 x 20 x 24 fire box insulated with 2 inch ceramic wool. 2, 2 inch intakes.

Went to season it with a small charcoal basket. It would not run much above 250 degrees unless I placed a fan facing the intake.

Here goes my question... is it my intake or exhaust throwing the brakes on my heat? Maybe both? Just need to build a real fire?

Need to see a pic of your intake, the exhaust looks like 4" and appears to be plenty tall enough to me.... maybe to tall!!!!!!

Yeah, have not gotten very far with the paint. Also I will be upgrading to brass valves, but only if this works.

Your intake air is too small. to give you an idea it takes 2- 4" for a 24x36
Use the pit calc on your dims and see what you come up with. I bet it will be closer to 2- 6"

Yeah, I think I might change it to a slider with a single pipe for a stoker.

Glad to hear that it is most likely not my exhaust. Spent some time making a detente for it. It is 4 inch, I wanted it to go through the roof and was afraid 6 inch would be too much volume.

Let that dude breathe. And I think its a great idea to make a port for the stoker.

I wanted to follow up with you guys since you helped me out. Added two more 2 inch (ID) pipes to the door. It will run 425 all day if I let it.

Took first place in pork yesterday, Smokin in the Ozarks. Second place in people's choice pork. Got to love these home builds.

Thanks smokerbuilder.

Does insulating the firebox help? Where did you buy it and what kind did you use? I've seen several websites that sale it but I don't know which to get.

It helps SO MUCH. We used cerwol (sp). You can use Roxul from home depot. Just get the stuff rated at 1800 degrees or more.
