Attaching insulated FB to trailer

Post by carterk » March 28th, 2017, 11:45 am

Hey all, I'm finally finishing up my 250 gallon trailer build and have run into some trouble attaching my firebox to my trailer. The firebox is made of 1/4" and is semi-insulated on the sides and top with 14 ga sheet to cover the insulation. I have now realized that this will provide a very weak connection where the sides of the firebox meet the back rail of the trailer. I am able to run welds along the entire back of the FB as it is just 1/4" plate but I'm not sure this will be enough to support the weight of the box. What do you guys think?

I know the FB hangs low on my trailer build, are you able to make a carriage under your FB instead of welding to the sides? More labor intensive I know but could give you the support your looking for.

If you're going to weld nice and strong on the CC side of the FB onto that cross member the way it goes to the FB shouldn't really even do anything so it would look like it was but probably not really ever have a load weld away I say.

I agree with RC, but if you're nervous about it you could always weld a thicker piece of steel to the outside of the FB going from front to back & weld the supports to that to spread the load. :kewl:
