You can clean those welds up with grinder and flap disc if you really want to but the main thing is that it's sealed. You should hug your friends neck cause that is a sweet drip pan

That is looking really great. And what I found was that once you slap a coat of paint on the welds they seem less "rough". And an absolutely sweet drip tray you got there too.

That drip pan looks so nice it probably won't fit in the door opening. That is my luck. Is that going to be your baffle plate? it is pretty thin, chances are it won't do a lot of transferring like a thicker BP would. A thin plate will radiate very hot just out the gate (throat opening) and not much at all on the other end. Don't let me stop you, just don't weld it in before you try it.

It just drops into the cooking chamber , fits through the door opening like a glove. I've got some 1/4 plate and a nice peice that falls between 1/8 & 3/16 for the baffle / tuning plates. I'm going to have the drip pan mounted just above the baffle.

Was hoping to dive into it again tonight but woke up to a water leak in our roof so that's on the list.[emoji58]

This afternoon I wire wheeled the interior of the cooking chamber, very messy. The flaky rust had a slight oily quality I assume from the compressor head. A good burn should take care if any residue.

I laid out two rails that will support the tuning plates, and rough cut the plates from 1/4" plate. I'll clean off the edges tomorrow.

I'm curious if drilling a succession of holes is of any benefit to the tuning plates.

Also on tap for tomorrow is making the pass through for the drip tray drain pipe, laying out supports for the drip tray and then supports for the grills. Then cut the baffle for the throat.

I'm trying to get how this is working. I'm not saying it won't just figuring it out. So the drip pan does or doesn't sit on the tuning plates? The tube attached to the drip pan goes through to the bottom of the CC?

Yes the drip tube travels downward through the first tuning plate. I don't have any pictures of the setup yet but the tuning plates are set on some 3/16" x 1 " bar running along the length of the CC opening. The plates are about 14x8...four of them.

The drip pan sits about a half inch above that on its own supports.

The grilles rest on their own rails as well.

I am utilizing the air outlet that would typically be on the side of the tank to accept the drain for the drip tray. I have a piece if 1" NPT black pipe the will be welded in the port and will have a ball valve on it. The drip pan tube will slide inside the black pipe.

That drain will be in between the firebox and aluminum underbody box.

The smoker is now mobile. There is still some work to do, like building a vent damper for the firebox, raise the woodbox and fix a shelf for a water pan inside the box. Build a shelf frame for the front of the cooking chamber, install door stops for opening the lid, counterweight for the door etc, but it's getting close to done.

The stack raincap is an air cleaner lid from a Super 225 Slant 6 MOPAR, and the FIREDOME emblem is from a DeSoto sedan many years ago.

After the first burn to clean the unit and help lift some of the coating off the tank, it will be repainted with hi-temp black stove paint.
