Curious if this insulation from Grainger will work for my firebox top? 1200 degree rated and I can buy a single piece instead of a whole carton worth.

Suppose either would work. Both look to be heat resistant.

The one posted from lowes looks to be batt not a roof ridged board. I did buy a pack of the ridged stuff from lowes last week. I think I would prefer that for this application.

So the rigged board is what I want? If I get that I’ll probably insulate the bottom was well since half will be leftover.

Either should work. The rigid Just seems easier to work with and if you do the sides gravity may take the batt style with it.

Been making progress but my last minute insulated top kicked my butt. Kinda hard cutting it just right so there isn’t big gaps and then inserting it inside of a welded box. Obviously did this backwards. Welding inside the box sucked. I feel like my hose kept getting kinked and it was impossible to steady myself. The piece you see unwelded inside the box is on top of a 2 inch thick piece of insulated supported by four 2 inch squares so the insulation didn’t get crushed before welding it.

My first thought is you did that semi-circle cut with a cut-off wheel. My second thought is that is pretty darn good cutting!

Quick question. I have access to a big cherry picker but nothing else. The firebox is dang heavy and my question is which gets mounted first. Should I set the cook chamber in place and then mount the firebox with the cherry picker? Or should I weld the CC to the FB and then use the cherry picker to mount it all at once? My struggle with the later idea is figuring out how to elevate the CC to the firebox opening. Bricks and 2x4?

Either way will work fine but I prefer to weld the CC and FB together before I mount it to the stand/trailer. I find that it's easier to get a good weld on them if I can flip it over and there's nothing in the way. You could mount it to the stand and then add the FB as long as the stand doesn't make it difficult to access the welds that join the unit together. I usually set the FB flat on the floor and lift the CC into position, I put several good tacks on them and recheck that it didn't move, I then weld as much I as can reach, flip over and weld the bottom.
