Firebox size

Post by 398982 » May 27th, 2015, 3:31 pm

Hello Ya'll

I building my 3rd offset, but I have never built an insulated firebox which I am doing this time. My cook chamber is 30" by 108" but it does have the rounded ends which brings the volome down some. I plan on also using more 30" pipe fot the outer portion of the firebox and a 24" pipe for the inner liner. I have typically always made my fireboxs 1/3 the length of the cook chamber. I plugged these numbers into the pit calcualtor and it says I need a firebox a little longer than 4 feet. This seems really long in comparison too the cook chamber. I know its probably because of the smaller diameter pipe, but don't I gain more effecicy with the isulation? Which would let me make the firebox shorter>

I think it still needs to be the same size as what the calculator says because of the btus subject and proper burning of wood. Someone may correct me on that so see if someone else chimes in on this but i think thats what ive heard.

Having built both insulated and non insulated, the internal dimensions of your FB need to be what the calculator says they should be. You add dimension to the outside to compensate for the insulation.

It could be a lot shorter if you make it square. Just saying, square has space in corners that pipe doesn't you might be surprised. Try the calc
