Cook Chamber Transition Size

Post by cyberstrategist » June 20th, 2016, 8:31 am

Can I assume that the transition opening between a round horizontal to a rectangular vertical should have the same measurements as the firebox opening to the main cook chamber? Or, is there an expansion ration to compensate for the heat expanding the air as it leaves the firebox?

You know, I actually do love the engineering side of what we do ... lol

I'd make it as large as possible but I would say the same as the throat at the very minimum. I've always been told that going from a large throat to a smaller BP gap changes the velocity of the air flow, kinda like putting your finger over the end a water hose. In a horizontal RF it's used to really move the smoke/air back across the pit, I don't think that'd be needed in a vertical cooker. jm2cw

If you make a damper for it, make it big and close it down if necessary.
