Offset smoker and firebox size.

Hi. I’ve been on here a while but I don’t right much. I’m really getting into it more now. I’m building an offset with a 60 gallon propane tank and it’s 20” diameter and I have a firebox that is 17” long and 20” diameter as well. Does this seem like a good combo? I couldn’t make sense of the calculator. Thanks for any help you may have.

According to the calculator, your FB is the maximum recommended size so it will work fine. Don't be afraid to ask any questions that you may have and someone will be glad to help you out.

A round firebox is not as easy to build as a square one...just a thought.

Yeah I wanted to do a square one but a friend gave me some pipe and a enough plate to cap off each end. I actually got a lot done on it today.

I’m just worried now that I put the firebox to low. I guess it’ll be ok.

I dont think you can put them too low...performance wise...I could be wrong.... but it would only be a question of aesthetics... the bottom of your CC appears to be off the ground by 16"... your FB only by maybe 2-3" (a brick and some plywood) any idea how much taller your going to make the final height? Im guess ing you dont want to BF that close to the ground, burn whatever is on the ground, plus just bending down so much to tend the fire....

Yes it will al be lifted up higher. It’s all really low to the ground right now. Not sure how higher to make it but I may have to lift it and try some different heights to see what is comfortable.

Can anybody suggest a smoke stack size? I have some 4 inch square tubing that I was thinking of using but someone told me that wasn’t big enough.

Square tubing will work fine as long as it's sized correctly. The calculator said 4x4x16.75, it can be a little longer than that without any issues. I like for the stack to be tall enough to keep the smoke out of my eyes so you might want to figure out what the overall height of your cooker will be before you commit to a stack size. If the 16.5'' stack is to short, you could use a 3'' pipe and it would increase the required length to 38''.

The firebox is definitely mounted lower than I’ve seen but as long as the throat is of the proper size, I don’t see any issues.

To help determine height, I used y kitchen counter as reference. If you are comfortable prepping food in your kitchen, then use that height for your bottom rack. I don’t want to have to lean over but having a smoker too high is even worse as you are always reaching.

Worked on my smoker a little more. Moved the firebox up higher and got a base under it. Got a lot more to do though.

Haha. Yeah I still have to buy some caster to put on it. I had that laying around so I used it to move over against the wall to make space.

Well I finally got mostly finished on the smoker. Took me forever just working on it here and there. I do have casters under it but not pictured. Anyway this is just a few random pics of it and I have few things I want to do to it but it’s ready to season and cook for sure. This is my first one but I plan to build more.

At what point does the FB size calculator not work? According to the calculations I need a 20" round by 14" long FB. That seems small to me and maybe more of a hassle to get wookd in there. I just haven't seen many FB's under 20". Can I go bigger and stay under a certain size differential % or is going bigger not a good idea?

I did follow the numbers pretty close. It wasn’t spot on but very very close. The stack in a hair taller than the calculated called for but I can always shorten it if needed. Tomorrow it will be baby back ribs and sirloin cap going on just because that’s what I have in the freezer. I can’t wait. I think I’m going to wire wheel the whole thing and spray a high heat clear coat on it. I hope it turns out ok.
