Thoughts on this?

Post by BlindDrunk » June 8th, 2020, 1:36 pm

Hello,

I have been a long time reader. So much great information and a lot of talented people on here. Curious on what everyone on here thinks. 48in Diameter x 120in long. Converting this into an offset smoker? Pictures are what it is now.

It's a pretty cool grill for sure. I like the idea of converting it to a smoker but see a couple challenges...1st is that the lid open at the center of the barrel. It would let all the heat out when open and if you wanted multiple racks you would have to come up with something unique to hold them up. The other challenge would be installing the chimney. These aren't insurmountable challenges, but they would make for more work.

Good luck!

Are you thinking offset, or fire basket at one end with a partition to block the direct heat?

I was thinking offset. Fire box in the back. Weld the lids down, create new doors. Chimney in the front. But I think the Fire box would have to be pretty big and possibly a new trailer?

I think you'll need to build a new trailer just to be on the safe side.

Like the idea but maybe that one just needs to be a grill. Definitely a lot of work to re-invent it as a smoker that really won’t save you any time or expense over building from scratch. Till you weld all the openings closed, cut in new ones, redesign the trailer to fit the drop firebox and re-work all the racks I’d say you could have started new.

I'm with leaving that one as a grill.....you learn to run that one right you can smoke in it just fine. I did it with a similar one but much smaller. You run just one of those fire trays and put the meat in behind it that thing will smoke ribs to perfection.

Question. Is it being used today at all? If you don't use it as a grill, you could rebuild it but do you want a smoker that big? Would you smoke that much meat at one time? Would you use it more as a smoker if it was smaller? Why not sell it and use the funds to build a new one "just right?"
