Fuel Consumption Between These 2 Pits

Post by EverydayDiesel » March 28th, 2021, 10:16 pm

Hello,

I am curious about fuel consumption between these two pits.

Offset - 30 Inch Diam. by 60 Inch Long Offset square firebox right side

Reverse flow - SB-RF 4800XL "Free plans"

How do they compare as far as fuel consumption?

The 30 x60 inch pit will use more fuel as it is a bigger pit.

With that said, it will be more but probably not considerably more. Once these things are up to temp, they don't take a whole lot of heat to maintain. I wouldn't choose one over the other based on fuel usage anyway.

I've seen a few posts with folks concerned w/ fuel consumption. I think the biggest difference is in the size of the splits you add. Most pits in my experience take 2 spits every 35 to 45 mins. The only difference is on my 60 gallon pit, it takes two the size of a pint can of beer and on the 100 gallon it takes two the size of my forearm. It was pretty much the same on the 120 gallon I built. And it didn't matter if it was reverse flow or standard offset. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the responses. Honestly I am just trying to think of the disadvantages of getting this big of a pit. The only one I can really come up with is more fuel but it sounds like that is negligible.

The bigger pits take longer to come up to temp, are slower to respond to temp adjustments, are harder to move, and cost more to build. On the other hand, they will last long enough to pass down to your kids, you’ll always have enough grill space, and they impress your neighbors more. I’m sure there are more pros and cons.
